What Happens During Inclement Weather? (Hint: We're Getting Better for You)

Here's a question we get asked more than you'd think: "What do roofers do when it rains?"

It's a fair question. Roofing is one of those trades where Mother Nature calls the shots. When the skies open up, the temperatures drop too low, or the wind kicks up past safe levels, we can't be up on your roof. Safety comes first: always. But that doesn't mean we're sitting around watching TV and waiting for the weather to break.

At Peninsula Roofing Company, inclement weather days are some of the most productive days we have. They're just productive in a different way. Instead of installing shingles or welding TPO membranes on your building, we're in the shop getting better at our craft. And that directly benefits you, the customer.

Rain Days Are Training Days

When the weather turns ugly, our shop turns into a classroom. We pull out materials, fire up the equipment, and get to work: on ourselves.

Our experienced crew members take the lead, walking the newer guys through techniques they might not get to practice as often in the field. Heat welding. Seam work. Flashing details. The stuff that separates a roof that lasts from a roof that leaks in three years.

Here's a look at what that actually looks like:

In this video, you can see our team using a rain day to practice TPO heat welding. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is one of the most popular commercial roofing membranes out there, and for good reason: it's durable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective. But here's the thing: a TPO roof is only as good as its welds.

Heat welding TPO requires precision. The temperature has to be just right. The speed has to be consistent. The pressure has to be perfect. Get any of those wrong, and you end up with weak seams that can fail down the road. That's why we don't just trust that our guys "know how to do it." We practice. We refine. We get better.

Learning From the Best: Our Manufacturer Partners

We're proud to work with some of the biggest names in the roofing industry. But it's not just about slapping their products on your roof. It's about understanding those products inside and out: and that requires real training.

Our team members regularly participate in certification programs and hands-on training sessions with manufacturers like:

  • GAF – North America's largest roofing manufacturer

  • Mule-Hide – Specialists in low-slope roofing systems

  • Owens Corning – Industry leaders in residential and commercial roofing

  • IKO – Global manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing products

  • Tamko – Trusted name in shingles and building products

  • Versico – Experts in single-ply roofing membranes

Each of these manufacturers has their own specifications, their own best practices, and their own ways of doing things. A GAF shingle installation isn't exactly the same as an IKO installation. A Versico TPO system has different requirements than a Mule-Hide system. By getting certified through these manufacturers, our crew learns the right way to install each product: not just the "good enough" way.

And here's the kicker: this training isn't a one-and-done deal. Roofing technology evolves. New products come out. Installation techniques improve. We stay current because our customers deserve installers who know what they're doing with the latest materials and methods.

Why This Training Matters: Workmanship Warranties

Let's talk about something that directly affects your wallet and your peace of mind: warranties.

When you get a new roof, you typically get two types of coverage. First, there's the manufacturer's material warranty, which covers defects in the roofing products themselves. Second: and this is the big one: there's the workmanship warranty, which covers the actual installation.

Here's what a lot of homeowners and business owners don't realize: not every roofing contractor can offer manufacturer-backed workmanship warranties. Those warranties are reserved for certified contractors who have proven they know how to install the products correctly.

Because our team invests the time in manufacturer training and certification programs, Peninsula Roofing Company is authorized to offer extended workmanship warranties from GAF, Mule-Hide, Owens Corning, IKO, Tamko, and Versico. That means when we install your roof, you're not just getting our word that we did it right: you're getting the manufacturer's backing too.

Think about what that means for you:

  • Long-term protection – These warranties can cover your roof for years, sometimes decades

  • Third-party accountability – The manufacturer stands behind our work

  • Real value – A roof with a solid warranty is worth more if you ever sell your property

This isn't something we take lightly. We earn those certifications. We maintain them. And we prove our skills on every job site: and on every rain day in the shop.

The Culture of Getting Better

There's something special about watching our veteran roofers teach the younger crew members. Guys who've been doing this for 20 or 30 years, passing down what they've learned to the next generation. It's how the trade has always worked, and it's how quality gets preserved.

But we don't just rely on tradition. We combine that old-school mentorship with modern training programs, manufacturer certifications, and a genuine commitment to continuous improvement. The roofing industry is always changing, and we change with it.

Peninsula Roofing Company Crew at Work

When you see our trucks parked at the shop on a rainy Tuesday, know that we're not wasting time. We're investing it. We're running through heat welding techniques. We're reviewing manufacturer specs. We're making sure that when the sun comes back out, we're ready to give you the best roof possible.

What This Means for Your Next Project

Whether you need a residential roof replacement, a commercial flat roof installation, or just some repairs to get you through another season, you want a contractor who takes their craft seriously. You want people who don't cut corners: not on your roof, and not on their own skills.

At Peninsula Roofing Company, we've been serving Delmarva since 1947. That's over 75 years of roofs, and we're still learning. Still training. Still getting better.

The next time it rains and you wonder what your roofer is up to, now you know. We're in the shop, making sure that when we're on your roof, we're bringing our absolute best.
